We are introduced to Will and the rest of his friends (Mike, Lucas, and Dustin) in an intense game of Dungeons & Dragons at Mike’s house. Dustin and Will, after Dustin bets to give Will any comic he wants, race each other. Will leaves Dustin behind, which was his first mistake. On his way home, he cuts through an area that we discover is government property and, specifically, states no one is allowed trespass. Well, 1. 2 year old boys aren’t notorious for reading or following rules. Will’s second mistake has been made. This is when Will meets what I figure is a cross between Slenderman and the Predator. It’s a dark, slender creature, but we never get to see its face during the episode.

Will freaks out (rightfully so) and skids off the road, abandoning his bike and running to his house. The creature follows. After realizing that the locked door is not going to keep the creature in, Will books it to his family’s shed and starts loading a gun before pointing it at the door. Alas, this is not where the creature comes from. In a brilliantly shot move, the camera pans to the increasingly blinding light bulb before panning back to reveal both Will and the Creature are gone.

Well done! After Will disappears we are introduced to his mother Joyce (Winona Ryder) and his older brother Jonathan, two overly worked individuals trying to maintain the household with what little money that can. Upon realizing that Will is not up, Joyce goes to check on him and realizes that he isn’t there. She calls Mike’s mom and quickly realizes that something is wrong when she’s told that he left at 8 pm the previous night. This is where we are then introduced to Chief Jim Hopper (David Harbour) who appears to be a drunk and a man who doesn’t take his job all too seriously. Based off of our introduction and his interactions with Joyce, who has frantically come to report her son missing, we get the sense that working in this tiny Indiana town as a cop is boring and uneventful.

However, he humors her and begins to do what I would deem a casual search for the boy. After picking up information from his friends, the Chief gathers up a couple of his men to go search for Will. This leads them to the discovery of Will’s bike, prompting the Chief to start taking things a bit more seriously. Stranger Things Season 1. This leads us to the Sheriff looking around the Byers’ house before tracing his steps back to the shed. Hearing a strange sticky sound, he investigates only to have the light bulb act strangely. Sensing the weirdness of the situation, he decides to organize a search party to try to find Will.

At this point, I am thinking at least he’s finally realized something is weird up in this teeny town. Meanwhile, there is a subplot connected to the creature surrounding the mysterious ‘Eleven’ (Millie Bobby Brown), a young girl who either doesn’t know many words or is very selective in what she says. Remember that government facility I mentioned earlier? It appears that the creature and the girl both escaped from there and are both missing. We end up finding ‘Eleven’ sneaking into a diner and gorging on food before being discovered by the, rather unfortunate, owner. He ends up reporting her disappearance to Social Services, but that plan goes south when he (SPOILERS) gets shot in the face after bringing a supposed Social Services worker inside.

This leads to ‘Eleven’ being confronted by a couple of government officials, but she manages to get away with her “abilities”. These will most likely be explained later since the show is doing so much to set her up as an important character.

Then again, when are telekinetic girls not considered important characters? Here’s looking at you Carrie and Charlie…We re- visit the Byers Home as Joyce is trying to cut in contact with her deadbeat ex Lonny.

After a couple of failed attempts, the phone rings and she picks up. There is a bunch of static and then some heavy breathing. In the background, we can hear growling. Joyce starts freaking out, thinking that it is her son. I don’t want to say that it is her son because I’m honestly not convinced yet.

However, Joyce fervently believes that this is the case. A weird bolt of electricity zaps her from the phone before cutting dead. She starts sobbing while Jonathan, her other son, attempts to comfort her. All of these things come together at the end of the episode when Mike, Lucas, and Dustin decide to go try to search for Will on their own. I would not have suggested doing it in the pouring rain but, hey, whatever floats their boat.

While they are deep within the woods, Mike hears a rustling sound. They all stop and listen, pointing their flashlights in the direction of the sound.

This is when ‘Eleven’ appears after running away from the diner. Thus, concluding the episode with a somewhat cliffhanger. GENERAL MUSINGS AND FINAL THOUGHTSI’m getting some Alien  and Predator vibes. I mean, come on! The first two minutes of the episode and we hear strange growling before Mr. Random Scientist Guy gets pulled up? Weird slender anthropomorphic creature?

Much Alien vibe is Alien with a dash of Signs thrown in there. Rule of thumb: Don’t trespass on government property…ever…Second rule of thumb: Maybe it’s best not to trust the government…period…Why is the government tracking the phone calls within this tiny little town? Merely a rhetorical question but, seriously, in a town where nothing goes on, I would be very bored being paid to listen to hearing the mundane conversations that are had. The gooey, stick looking tree thing that the government officials found in the quarantine section? I really want to poke it. I’m definitely ready for the next episode now that we’re hopefully down with the exposition bit. Have you watched Stranger Things yet?
