Point a camera at someone in the far, far distance, but keep the focus trained on the foreground, and that person takes on an almost extraterrestrial quality, like some sort of spun sugar stick figure, or a walking skeleton. To the Bone opens with just such a shot That reed thin silhouette advancing toward us is Ellen an alarmingly frail Lily Collins, an anorexic young woman whos been through four different treatment centers for her eating disorder. The film tells the story of Ellens fifth, and final, in patient experience  its not an easy sit, nor a terribly entertaining one, but in the hands of writer director Marti Noxon, it delivers painful insights in a relatively fresh way. While not downright irreverent, this is the kind of anorexia movie where characters crack jokes about not wanting to visit the Holocaust Museum, lest they feel guilty for starving themselves. To the Bone would hardly qualify as a comedy, but it doesnt take the kid gloves approach either in fact, its attitude seems almost ruthlessly pitiless at times owing to the fact that it was inspired at least in part by Moxons own experience as a teen, she starved herself so severely that her heart stopped briefly. Considering Moxons accomplished CV as a writerproducer on such feisty shows as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Un. REAL, and Girlfriends Guide to Divorce, its a bit counterintuitive that she chose the most TV appropriate subject of her career to serve as her big screen directorial debut. And yet, Noxons sharp enough to know just how to avoid the melodramatic pitfalls that would have made her script play like just another disease of the week special. As far as Ellens family is concerned, she may as well be dying before their eyes  and its hard not to agree with them. A group of professors working on a new encyclopedia encounter a mouthy nightclub singer who is wanted by the police to help bring down her mob boss lover. Through some combination of weight loss, visual effects, and makeup darkened eye sockets, exaggerated shadows around the cheekbones and collarbone, Collins looks more like a Goth zombie or corpse than your typical moody teen. Ellen is a talented artist, but doesnt sketch much  not since an incident with her Tumblr feed had a disastrous impact on a fellow rexie. And shes got a clever take on the world, even if she hasnt quite decided that she wants to stick around and live in it. That latter aspect of her personality is both the crux of her condition and the thing that makes her a somewhat frustrating character to watch. Ellens problem is that shes impassive, disengaged from life, and potentially suicidal in one of the slowest motion means possible. Everyone else  from her step mom Carrie Preston and half sister Liana Liberato to her biological mom Lili Taylor, now a lesbian  is clearly rooting for Ellens recovery. But as any therapist can tell you, healing only happens when the patient wants to get better. Speaking of therapists, To the Bone supplies a rather unconventional one in the form of Keanu Reeves Dr. William Beckham. He runs a Los Angeles based group home called Threshold, where Ellen agrees to spend at least six weeks with a mix of other girls. From the opening scene, we know that she doesnt typically mix well with other eating disorder patients, and yet, something is different about this gang  though its not at all clear what, exactly. Theres a pregnant woman at risk of losing her fetus, and an emotionally stunted girl in such critical condition that shes been intubated Ellen freaks her out further when she divulges that each feed sac packs 1,5. And then theres Luke, Thresholds lone male resident, an ex Londoner whose dance career was cut short after he injured his knee. In a more conventional, crowd pleasing version of this story, Ellen would bond with her housemates and fall in love Luke  and Noxon works in enough of that to keep audiences interested. But the idea isnt to make Ellens recovery seem fun. Fortunately, Collins possesses that inner brilliance, call it star quality, that conveys the potential that might be snuffed out if Ellen did succumb, which helps keep us invested, even amid the movies weakest stretch, when her character hits rock bottom. Meanwhile, its strongest part, which takes place in the Los Angeles County Museum of Arts Rain Room, leaves both Ellen and the audience feeling blissfully alive. Ultimately, To the Bone works because Noxon has been through what Ellen is experiencing, right down to picking a name that suits her better Marti was born Martha, and Ellen rechristens herself Eli at Dr. Beckhams suggestion. And though the film is thick with scenes of counseling and introspection, it never crosses into that toxically self indulgent zone of therapy through filmmaking. Instead, it feels as if Noxon has long since worked out these issues herself, and now shes paying it forward, offering the world a film with some of the wisdom she learned. That still doesnt make it an especially pleasant movie to watch, but it is one that just might save a few lives. The three helicopterstwo Army Blackhawks and a Coast Guard H3circle the skies above Cat Island like impatient birds of prey. At the radio in one of the Army choppers sits Pat Shea, 4. Operation BAT, the U. S. Drug Enforcement Agencys interdiction operation in the Bahamas. One hundred feet below, a red Chevy Blazer, bundles of cocaine visible in its window, speeds down an island road toward a small village. Okay, Shea shouts into his radio above the engines roar. Come to a hover. Lets land and get em. As the choppers swoop in, the car barrels to a halt, its three occupants quickly fleeing into some nearby shanties. Sheas squad of agents and Bahamian police leap from the hovering helicopters and begin a shack to shack search for the smugglers. For Shea, a thick muscled ex Marine and former New York City street drug agent, the operation brings another 9. For the Colombian drug lords who had sent the smugglers here en route to the U. S. mainland, the price of travel goes up another notch. Pat Shea has headed Op BAT an acronym referring to Operation Bahamas and Turks Caicos Islands since 1. U. S. Embassy in Nassau. Launched by the DEA in 1. Bahamian islands, Op BAT forces include members of the Royal Bahamian Police who make the arrests, the U. S. Customs Agency, Coast Guard, Army and Navy. Last year the operation accounted for 9. This year the coke seizures are down to 1. DEA officials credit Shea for scaring the U. S. bound couriers into using other routes. Much of the work was mind numbingcold, all night stakeouts on rooftops, monitoring the doings of drug dealersbut there was also the sheer rush of working undercover, says Shea. My partner and I would go into the Bed Stuy section of Brooklyn, and this blue eyed Irishman would wear shades, open my shirt, put on some gold and presto Atlantic City ready to do business. While the street work schooled Shea in tactics, it also taught him about his own vulnerability. He recalls one case when he was working with a prostitute informant to set up a drug dealer, and to make the arrest, he had to break through a door to get to his man. Trouble was, the door was a tougher foe than he imagined, and it took him five or six whacks. Once inside, he yelled, Freeze then dived for the dealer and slapped on the cuffs. Afterward, he says, Im feeling pretty good. Then we lock him up, and Im talking to the informant, and she tells me the guy wasnt reaching for his gun. He was putting it away. In those few seconds itd taken me to get in, shed talked him out of killing me, pointing out that hed buy it too. See, I was cocky. But youve got to be smart. The jobs dangerous. Shea, who moved to his present 5. DEAs busy Miami office, now takes novice Bahamian cops aside to share that wisdom in the ways of drug fighting. I want them to know they dont have to chase bad guys into the brush and maybe get shot up, says Shea. Theyve got helicopters to do that for them. Away from the choppers and his agency office, Shea retires to the rented three bedroom Nassau home he shares with his second wife, Mary Ann Fernandez, 3. The two met while Mary Ann was a DEA secretary in New York and married three years ago. Shea has a son and two daughters ages 1. Mary Ann, a son named Ryan born two years ago. Their home is in a nice Nassau neighborhood, and apart from the wrought iron bars protecting its windowsand other precautions from danger he refuses to divulgeit is a homey family dwelling complete with a pool in the backyard. Still, thanks to the beeper constantly on his belt, Shea is never far from another airborne assault. He thinks hes back in the Marines again, says Mary Ann with a sigh. He puts on camouflage, jumps out of helicopters. He thinks hes young again. Shea, the aging, uncaped crusader, only laughs. But then he admits, Shes right. It does light some fires.
