Billy says the money makes them free, but Wyatt repeats that they blew it and says good night. The next morning, as they are overtaken on a two- lane country road by an old pickup truck, the cowboy hat- wearing driver says, in a thick Louisiana or Cajun accent, "Hey there, look at them two". The other man in the truck reaches for a shotgun hanging in the back window, saying they will "scare the hell out of 'em". As they pass Billy on his left, the passenger lazily aims the shotgun out the window and says, "want me to blow your brains out?" while the driver laughs. Without looking at them, Billy raises his middle finger.

The man fires, and Billy has a lowside crash, his bike sliding on the pavement and Billy rolling along the roadside. Wyatt has stopped in the road and stares at the pickup as it drives past him. Wyatt rides back, and runs to Billy, then lays his American flag- emblazoned jacket over the large wound on Billy's left shoulder and chest, saying, "I'm going for help, Billy".

In the truck, passenger tells the driver, "We've got to go back." Wyatt rides down the road, moving right to left on the screen, towards the pickup as it makes a u- turn. As the truck passes Wyatt in the opposite direction, the passenger leans across the driver and fires the shotgun out the window. The gunshot is shown as a red blotch that fills the screen for a moment, followed by a reverse cut showing the riderless motorcycle, moving left to right now, flying through the air away from the road with the front wheel breaking away and flames or sparks coming from the right side of the bike's engine.
